It was a bang on year for collards and cabbages last fall. All the green things took off after August and just kept right on growing until just after Christmas when that long cold snap set in. For Frances and I, living way over here in Elon, our visits to the Sax-General-Store are always great fun. The food is always great, but it is the spirit of community in that little store that makes it worth the ride down the Haw River Valley.

Jeff, all the seeds are ordered, the ground is ready for taters, onions, greens and carrots...and the garlic is already ankle high. Its just waiting for a little warm weather and a few more hours of sunshine. Until it comes, we will get just a little bit warmer down at the store from a bottle of that Italian red off the shelf near the door. I met ya'll briefly when I was there visiting Margaret Jemison a couple of times last year. The General Store, Mill, and Saxapahaw community vibe was definitely part of what is pulling us to move 3000 miles across the country. Your writing is eloquent and beautiful and so true. Reading this makes me even more excited to start our new life there. The mystical pull to a place is exactly what pulled me there. It was a feeling, and a year later we are packing up. I look forward to seeing you soon, and enjoying the best scones I've ever had. I attended a meeting recently where road improvements were being discussed. One lady, a school teacher, burst out passionately with "I hate roundabouts!" That's a lot of emotion to expend on something that might be discussed more objectively. I wonder if the kids in her class are exposed to outbursts like this, and, if so, what they take away from that behavior. Choosing to see situations as resolvable only in "either/or" terms can limit almost every aspect of life. In our national politics, it would serve us better if we listened more, shouted less, and resolved to find the best common path available. We'd be in a position to promote the "American" brand rather than the Republican/Democrat alternatives. It might be late for some of us, but our kids would benefit, for sure.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-722164267451254364.post-21710756304824702202009-06-28T17:00:51.211-07:002009-06-28T17:00:51.211-07:00Why was the damn thing leaking in the first place?...Why was the damn thing leaking in the first place?Hankie Doodlenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-722164267451254364.post-55300995399755407262009-06-26T20:51:27.913-07:002009-06-26T20:51:27.913-07:00hmmmm... what is successful?hmmmm... what is successful?Cameronhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11842967569691227965noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-722164267451254364.post-65201616007867096292009-06-26T17:27:51.963-07:002009-06-26T17:27:51.963-07:00Us against them, us against them = identification/...Us against them, us against them = identification/security. Both are great for all household cleaning and don't require any other products, except I do add baking soap to scrub with.

For handsoap I refill the foaming soap containers I use sometimes, like Bath and Body, etc., with about an inch of Bronner's and the rest water. Foaming soap containers are great pennypinchers to reuse and money makers to sell because they use so little soap.

Charlies soap does everything-really works with 1 T in laundry, except the hard sax well water does need some softening-add a touch of borax and/or washing soda-something else I'd like to see in the store. Thanks!Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13383628900681997974noreply@blogger.com
